John Cirelli 鈥27, Peyton Patrick 鈥27, Executive Director of Faculty Development Heather Keith (Radford University) and Director of Design Thinking Danielle Lake presented a session to help participants explore the value of wicked problems pedagogy and design thinking assessment strategies for building civic engagement capacities of faculty and students. They described the design and assessment of university-wide 鈥渨icked problems鈥 programming, showing how it can support students鈥 authentic engagement with problem- and community-based learning in order to understand and mitigate some of the world鈥檚 most pressing problems. In particular, they shared the story of Radford University鈥檚 Wicked Problems Initiative, which includes experiential learning courses, a minor, community engagement opportunities, co-curricular activities, and a university-wide 鈥淲icked Fest鈥 showcase that visualizes civic capacities, collaborative skills, and dispositions to act.
