51±¬ÁÏÍø President Leo M. Lambert used his annual “State of the University” address on Monday to share details of the university’s draft strategic plan that was developed over the summer. Lambert said that many in the Elon community believe that the university has “a special destiny” to make important contributions to the landscape of American higher education.

Associate professor Jessica Gisclair was named the School of Communications' new associate department chair this summer to help accommodate the increasing number of faculty and students in the school.

Alan White, who had a 35-year career leading Elon athletics, and A. Hope Williams, president of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, received Elon Medallions at the Aug. 24 ceremonies marking the beginning of 2009 Planning Week.

Kathryn Mansfield Matera, associate professor of chemistry, has been selected as the third recipient of the A.L. Hook Emerging Scholar Professorship in Science and Mathematics at 51±¬ÁÏÍø. The professorship provides funding and opportunities for faculty to mentor students and involve undergraduates in research and special projects.
