Madeline Edwards '15 receives award and presents research at annual mathematics sectional meeting /u/news/2015/04/02/madeline-edwards-15-receives-award-and-presents-research-at-annual-mathematics-sectional-meeting/ Thu, 02 Apr 2015 21:25:00 +0000 /u/news/2015/04/02/madeline-edwards-15-receives-award-and-presents-research-at-annual-mathematics-sectional-meeting/ Madeline Mayes Edwards, a senior applied mathematics major from Sudbury, Mass., was recognized for her research in the field of real analysis in mathematics.

Her presentation, “Derivative Sign Patterns for Infinitely Differentiable Functions in Three Dimensions,” focused on using relations between two-dimensional sign patterns in examining how such patterns occur in three dimensions. Professor Jeff Clark served as her research mentor.

The Walt and Susan Patterson Prize was established in 2006 to encourage undergraduates to participate in the annual meetings of the Southeastern Section of the Mathematical Association of America. The Patterson Prizes are awarded to outstanding undergraduate student presentation given at the meeting.
