Ashley Holmes
Ashley Holmes, lecturer in the English department, presented at the 2008 Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching.  Holmes’ presentation, titled “Redesigning Service-Learning: Considering Student and Community Partner Voices in Course Design” described a current research project she is conducting with funding from an Elon Community Partnership Initiative (CPI) Grant.
 
The project partners Holmes, three Elon students and a community partner in re-designing a Service-Learning section of English 110 (College Writing).  The course re-design team met four times in fall 2007 to consider how to improve the course; Holmes is teaching the re-designed course in spring 2008.

Holmes’ project explores the potential connections between Service-Learning and civic engagement, comparing several sections of College Writing courses.

Holmes, lecturer in the department of English, presented at the Conference on College Composition and Communication in New York on March 23. Holmes presented the paper “Exploring Voices and Identities: Multigenre Research in First Year Writing.” She joined three other instructors from NC State University to present on the panel: “Negotiating Student Voice in First Year Composition: Listening, Seeing, Speaking, and Writing.”

In her paper, Holmes argues for the value of non-traditional research assignments, such as the multigenre research paper, in first year composition courses. Holmes also describes the assignment and student learning in a gallery entry for Elon’s Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning.
