Their goal is to provide food-insecure members of our community with the opportunity to grow healthy food and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits of gardening. Around 10 volunteers are needed for the Garden Build Day on Saturday, April 4th, 9:00am – 12:00pm at S.A.F.E. (5950 NC-87, Graham, NC 27253). There will be opportunities for volunteers of all ages to help build raised beds and fencing, and lay soil, compost, and mulch to get the garden ready for planting. They will need to help the girls (middle and high school) with understanding key vocabulary words and reading comprehension skills. Set up and clean-up of the event space may also be required. No special skills are required of volunteers. This event will take place every Thursday from Feb. 28 to March 19, 2020 from 5:00-7:00 pm at 673-B Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.

KCSL: Volunteers Needed for Herb Festival /u/news/2020/03/03/kcsl-volunteers-needed-for-herb-festival-2/ Tue, 03 Mar 2020 17:38:26 +0000 /u/news/?p=781935 The Women’s Resource Center in Alamance County hosts the Herb Festival each year to provide Triad-area gardeners with the highest quality organic herbs, perennials, annuals, heirloom tomato and vegetable plants and specially-selected vendors. Student volunteers are needed to help the festival run as smoothly as possible. The event dates and volunteer shift information are listed below.

Wednesday, April 15, 3:00-5:00pm: basic staging of room, table set-up, and transporting of materials for the event

Thursday, April 16, 8:00am-Noon & Noon-5:00: unloading of plants as the trucks arrive, tagging and placement of plants, table set-up, misc tasks as needed

Friday, April 17, 8:30am-Noon, Noon-3:30pm & 3:30-7:30pm: straighten/replenish plants, assist customers with plants to vehicles, light floor sweeping (someone is bound to drop a pot or two)

Saturday, April 18, 8:30am-Noon, Noon-3:00pm & 3:00-5:00pm: same as Friday along with the start of breaking down of tables and moving materials back to the WRC storage area.

KCSL: Eastlawn Elementary Literacy Boot-camp /u/news/2020/03/03/kcsl-eastlawn-elementary-literacy-boot-camp/ Tue, 03 Mar 2020 17:37:49 +0000 /u/news/?p=782201 Eastlawn Elementary School is seeking volunteers for a literacy boot camp to be hosted for a group of 60 kindergarteners March 16-20, 2020. Previous teaching experience is not required (though that is a definite plus), however volunteers must undergo a background check and the Protection of Minors Training, be of at least 21 years of age, and attend a workshop in early March. Boot-camp sessions would be held from 8:00 AM -1:00 PM each day during the selected week and volunteers (around 6 per day) would be working alongside Eastlawn teachers and staff. We are reaching out in hopes of finding volunteers who enjoy dressing up, intense make-up and the opportunity to provide a fun and interactive event for the community. We have partnered with the Hollywood Horror Show to provide the make-up, costumes and layout of the Haunted Train and would love for your organization to be a part of this fun experience. This event will take place on October 24th, October 25th, and October 26th from 6:30-9:00 pm at Burlington City Park. The makeup and costume preparation will begin at 4:00 pm.
