In addition to serving as a representative to the General Assembly, Smith completed her three-year commitment as the member-at-large to the Council on Physical Education for Children. Smith also was elected chair of the newly-formed Council on Community Recreation and Outdoor Education.

Megan Deutschle ’11, Rob Brown ’12, Chris Brown ’12 and Jared Thompson ’12 co-presented a dance pedagogy session with Dr. Carol A Smith in November at the 62nd-annual North Carolina Alliance for Athletics, Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance convention in Winston-Salem, N.C. The session, attended by approxiately 100 public school and higher education faculty, was regarded as a highly successful one-hour presentation.

The session, “Assessing adventure programs as a retention tool,” addressed how 51±¬ÁÏÍø’s Adventures in Leadership and other outdoor education-based programs positively effect the retention rate from first to second year of college.

Carol Smith presents at state convention, publishes article /u/news/2008/12/05/carol-smith-presents-at-state-convention-publishes-article/ Fri, 05 Dec 2008 15:14:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/12/05/carol-smith-presents-at-state-convention-publishes-article/ Dr. Carol A Smith, associate professor in the Department of Health and Human Performance conducted a session at the North Carolina Alliance of Athletics, Health, Physical Education Recreation & Dance (NCAAHPERD) annual conference in Winston-Salem.  The session, “Learning New Dances: Contra and International Folk” was co-presented with Jenna Temple ’10, Tracy Llewellyn ’10 and Katherine Molzon ’10. 

Additionally, Smith recently had an article published: “Outdoor Adventure Program Retains New Students” in E-Source for College Transitions, vol 6, no.1.  This reported on the retention rate of students involved in the Adventures in Leadership Program, a weeklong leadership program based on adventure education principles.

Smith Presents at National Convention /u/news/2008/04/23/smith-presents-at-national-convention/ Wed, 23 Apr 2008 22:03:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/04/23/smith-presents-at-national-convention/ Dr. Carol A Smith, Associate Professor of Physical Education and Health/Health and Human Performance presented a session at the national AAHPERD convention in Ft Worth Texas the week of April 8-12.  In addition to her presentation on introducing county and western dance into the physical education curriculum, she was elected to the Executive Board of the Council of Adventure and Outdoor Education/Recreation of the American Association for Physical Activity and Recreation.  She continues to serve on the Council of Physical Education for Children for the National Association of Sport and Physical Education.
