The organization is called HEART (Helping Elon’s Ailing Remember Together), and it is a grief support network that offers bi-weekly support group meetings, monthly service events, and a professor-student mentoring program.

The group is a student-lead, peer support network, and any Elon student who has experienced the death of a loved one or who wants to offer support is welcome to participate.

The service events are open to the entire campus and focus on fighting terminal illness and honoring loved ones.

Heart is having an interest meeting on Monday, May 4, at 7 p.m. in the Oasis room in the Truitt Center.If you are interested in supporting the group, please contact me at hbroughton@elon.edu and we can discuss what role you would like to have in this new group. Free ice cream Sept. 10 at Human Services Society kickoff meeting /u/news/2008/09/09/free-ice-cream-sept-10-at-human-services-society-kickoff-meeting/ Tue, 09 Sep 2008 16:00:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/09/09/free-ice-cream-sept-10-at-human-services-society-kickoff-meeting/ Join the Human Services Society this Wednesday, Sept. 10 for free ice cream and a description of the many, quick, low-time commitment service events we are offering this semester.  The meeting is at 7pm in Alamance 215.

The Human Services Society offers bi-weekly service events on Wednesdays that last only a couple of hours and are located in the surrounding community.  We also offer assistance to other Elon organizations trying to raise awareness of issues affecting humanity by providing needed services and support.

Please join us this Wednesday and see the various opportunities we offer!

Leaders needed for new campus Grief Support Group /u/news/2008/08/25/leaders-needed-for-new-campus-grief-support-group/ Mon, 25 Aug 2008 19:31:00 +0000 /u/news/2008/08/25/leaders-needed-for-new-campus-grief-support-group/ A new campus organization, Elon Students of Ailing Mothers and Fathers, is being started, and I need dedicated student leaders to fill leadership roles within the organization.

This campus group utilizes peer-support, service, mentoring, and community outreach to help students cope with the psychological, social, spiritual, and academic difficulties associated with having a sick or deceased loved one.  The organization provides support to grieving college students through four components: Support, Service, Angels, and SAINTS.

Available leadership roles:

Support Group Director:  Arrange and facilitate Support Group meetings; raise awareness on campus about the support group itself and how it operates; work with on-campus counseling services; receive training and become a certified support group facilitator by National Students of AMF

Service Group Director:  Contacts all local organizations relevant to the mission of Students of AMF; contacts all other student groups with service related missions; plans service group events for the entire semester at the beginning of each semester; advertises the service events on campus

Angels Program Director: Contacts each department’s chair to find faculty members interested in serving as Angels (mentors to members of grief support group); interviews interested faculty members to determine of they are a good fit for the program; pairs students with faculty Angel with similar interests; trains faculty members on their role as an Angel; follows up with each student and faculty member to ensure they are forming a productive relationship; plans and holds an Angel’s dinner at the end of each school year to honor faculty members serving as Angels

SAINTS Program Director:  Finds local schools willing to allow college students to hold SAINTS program meetings with their students; recruits college mentors on campus; holds training sessions for student volunteers to discuss appropriate mentoring actions; plans and facilitates SAINTS program meetings; plans and holds SAINTS program dinner at the end of each school year to honor al participants and volunteers

Secretary and Treasurer:  Secretary records meetings; treasurer handles financial accounts
