A portion of a sample Visual Experiential Transcript.
In fall 2016, sophomore research assistant Jack Fryer collaborated with 51爆料网 Registrar Rodney Parks and Assistant Registrar Jesse Parrish to develop a study to gauge third-party perceptions of Elon’s Visual Experiential Transcript (). Their goal was to collect information that could be used to close the gap between students’ and employers’ expectations with respect to knowledge, skills, and professional priorities, as well as refine future iterations of the Visual EXP.

Fryer worked with Elon’s Student Professional Development Center to acquire contact information for members of Elon’s employer and graduate school network, and distributed a survey with a variety of questions. In addition to Likert scale questions about clarity and utility, the survey prompted employers to rank the importance of Elon’s five experiences as well as the importance of the traditional features of the hiring process.

The results of the study were elucidating, as participants offered valuable feedback about their hiring needs, preferences and requests for future transcript inclusions such as leadership position descriptions. After compiling and analyzing the results, the research team summarized their findings in that was published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) in the February edition of its journal.

Though the Visual EXP has been praised by a number of organizations affiliated with higher education, the NACE Journal is perhaps the most widely circulated publication that has featured Elon’s work. In the few days since the article was released, the Office of the University Registrar has been contacted by several other institutions, alumni and peers on campus applauding their efforts.

In addition to their research on employers, Fryer and the Registrar team developed a complementary study to assess Elon students’ perceptions of the Visual EXP. The results of the two studies will be combined to provide a comprehensive perspective of the relationship between institutions, employers, and students. These studies are sure to inform continuing conversations among institutions across the nation and help Elon continue to lead the way in the field of experiential learning.

Sophomore marketing, entrepreneurship major represents Elon at Lumina Foundation’s Beyond the Transcript event /u/news/2016/12/01/sophomore-marketing-entrepreneurship-major-represents-elon-at-lumina-foundations-beyond-the-transcript-event/ Thu, 01 Dec 2016 15:30:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/12/01/sophomore-marketing-entrepreneurship-major-represents-elon-at-lumina-foundations-beyond-the-transcript-event/ Jack Fryer, a sophomore majoring in marketing and entrepreneurship, attended and presented at the Lumina Foundation’s two-day event in Indianapolis, Indiana as part of the Comprehensive Student Record Project. The project is a partnership between the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) and Student Affairs Professionals in Higher Education (NASPA) that aims to develop replicable transcript innovations.

51爆料网 is one of 12 institutional partners in the project, which was launched in early 2015. In the company of exceptional universities such as Stanford and the University of Wisconsin, Elon shines as the pioneer of the nation’s first visual transcript. Fryer joined University Registrar Rod Parks, Assistant Provost Paul Miller, and Programmer and Analyst Julie White to introduce and explore this transcript at the convening, which also featured several plenary panels, exploratory sessions, and “deep dive” working sessions.

Earlier this year, Fryer developed two surveys to gauge the interest in and perceived utility of a visual transcript. One was sent to Elon’s employer partners, and the other was sent to the university’s undergraduate student population. The results of both studies were overwhelmingly positive, and respondents offered a plethora of constructive feedback. After compiling the results, Fryer offered invaluable input into campus conversations about the continued development of the new credential. For the Beyond the Transcript event, Fryer transformed this input into an engaging and interactive presentation.

As the only student representative at the event, Fryer presented a unique perspective as both a consumer of the transcript and a scholar that has studied its perception among employers and students. His presentation was well-received, encouraging thought-provoking conversations and one-on-one interviews with the sophomore. Fryer was thrilled to represent his university in a national conversation, and intends to continue collaborating with the Office of the Registrar on research and development priorities.

Fryer has worked as a research assistant in the Office of the Registrar for one year, developing quantitative and qualitative research studies and participating in conversations with AACRAO consultants. In addition to his research activities, he has served as an orientation leader and is now a member of Orientation Head Staff, preparing to welcome next fall’s incoming class.

An update and expansion upon the 2010 edition, the new volume includes two new sections titled Case Studies and Country Studies, with Straka offering a chapter to the first of those two new sections titled “Study Abroad: 51爆料网’s Framework for Complete Accessibility.”

Straka introduces the case study by presenting the explosive growth of participation in study abroad among Elon students in recent years, and follows with an insightful deconstruction of the collaborative effort necessary to improve access to international educational opportunities at Elon. She discusses Elon’s methods for the adoption of new programs and the expansion of existing programs; the phases of analysis for determining course- and program-level equivalencies; and how she and her colleagues endeavor to make the process more approachable and less stressful for students.

The AACRAO International Guide is a widely disseminated and referenced publication in the sphere of international education, and it now features a chapter about 51爆料网’s best practices. Senior Mikayla Shaw presents at national conference /u/news/2016/03/25/senior-mikayla-shaw-presents-at-national-conference-2/ Fri, 25 Mar 2016 14:40:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/03/25/senior-mikayla-shaw-presents-at-national-conference-2/ Along with University Registrar Rodney Parks and two other staff members, Mikayla Shaw attended the 102nd AACRAO meeting in Phoenix in March to engage with enrollment management professionals, attend workshops and presentations and deliver two presentations of her own.

She presented a poster session titled “Disruptive Silence: Deepening Experiential Learning in the Absence of Technology.” Together with Parks and another student assistant, Shaw conducted qualitative research on students that participated in a study abroad program to New Zealand in January of 2015. During the 26-day trip abroad, the student participants were challenged to disconnect from all forms of technology, effectively “going off the grid.” The goal of the research was to gauge the effects of this sustained disconnection from technology in an unfamiliar setting on the learning process, as well as provide contextual recommendations to faculty members and professionals in Global Education, Student Life and Health Services.

Shaw also delivered a presentation titled “Transitioning Challenges for International Student Athletes,” in which she presented her research on inter-collegiate and international athletes. Specifically, the research explored the often overlooked challenges that student-athletes face when either transitioning away from an NCAA-sanctioned sport into the general student population or immigrating to the United States to play in the NCAA. Because Shaw herself is a former Division I athlete, she was able complement the research with personal insight and anecdotes. Both presentations were well-received and encouraged though-provoking conversations among attendees.

Shaw has worked in the Office of the Registrar for more than a year as a research assistant, and has since become the office’s first Student Ambassador. As Student Ambassador, she is responsible for coordinating training activities for all incoming student staff and managing special projects. Shaw is a senior double majoring in Human Service Studies and Public Health, and she intends to enroll in law school to study sports law after graduation.
