Telfer will be one of twelve students that sit on the national student advisory committee for the BACCHUS Network. She is a SPARKS (Students Promoting Awareness, Responsibility, Knowledge and Success) Peer Educator at Elon.

Five SPARKS Peer Educators attended the BACCHUS General Assembly in Orlando and came in third place in the school display exhibit category. Chrissie Cordeira, Telfer, Emily Reynolds, Billy O’Riordan and Jack Utrata attended the conference.

In addition, Cordeira, team leader of SPARKS; Telfer, team leader-in-training; and Lauren Martin, coordinator for substance education, presented “Teaming Up for Success: Collaborating with Campus Partners.”

Self-Defense Workshop
 
SPARKS Peer Educators and the Office of Personal Health Programs and Community Well-Being are offering a Self-Defense Workshop for Women. Participants will learn basic physical and verbal skills with an emphasis on preventing assaults. The program will be taught by Kathy Hopwood and Beth Seigler of SafeSkills®, Inc, a North Carolina company that specializes in teaching self-defense programs for agencies, businesses and universities.
 
Participants will learn:
* a psychological mind-setting exercise
* the dynamics of assaults
* verbal self-defense concepts
* physical self-defense skills
 
The program is open to female students and staff at Elon and is free to participants. Call 278-7285 to register or email Lauren Martin at lmartin10@elon.edu. Pre-registration is required.
 
A second workshop will be offered on Friday, April 25 from 4-7pm in Koury Studio 006.

Peer educators are role models, leaders, activists, and friends. If you are interested in becoming a Peer Educator, please email your resume and cover letter to Lauren Martin at lmartin10@elon.edu with “Peer Educator Position” in the title of the email.
