The associate professor in communications presented April 6-7 at both the National Conference on Media Reform in Denver and the Broadcast Education Association conference in Las Vegas.

As official reporters for the Global South Summit in Nashville on Nov. 14, 51±¬ÁÏÍø sophomores Erin Delaney and Bethany Coats used Twitter, Facebook, Wordpress, Hootsuite and Google Docs to spread the word about the world’s food production.

Communications associate professor Michelle Ferrier hosted entrepreneurs from venture capital, accelerator and media startup firms in a roundtable discussion on teaching media entrepreneurship at the UNITY 2012 conference Aug. 2-3 in Las Vegas.

Associate Professor Michelle Ferrier of the School of Communications contributed to the recent Federal Communications Commission inquiry into the media needs of the American public communities through a report and literature review to inform new policy development.

The program was held at the Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard University from July 20-22, 2012.

As an entrepreneur, Michelle Ferrier has experienced startup pains and joys with her local food news site LocallyGrownNews.com. But as a researcher, she was puzzled as to why few people of color seem to make up the ranks of media entrepreneurs.

Community residents aren't just contributing to local media through subscriptions or newsstand sales, but through active participation in news processes at all levels, said Michelle Ferrier, associate professor of Communications at 51±¬ÁÏÍø.
