Join us at the 3rd annual Active City Streets on Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Active City Streets is a free community festival in downtown Burlington supporting healthy and active lifestyles. The event includes live performances, food trucks, vendors, exercise classes, and more!

The Kernodle Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement is collaborating with Burlington’s Recreation and Parks Department and many other community organizations to help organize the event. This is the first year Elon is an offical collaborator and organizer in Active City Streets, signifying the university’s growing commitment to the community and its efforts in encouraging Elon students to connect with greater Burlington.

In the first year of partnership Elon has more than 12 groups participating, including:

  • Campus Rec
  • Elon Athletics
  • Elon’s Finest
  • Laughelongs
  • Flight of the Phoenix, Elon’s Ballroom Dance Team
  • Steele Smiths
  • Win Stuff (Elon Student Television)
  • Loy Farm
  • Campus Kitchen
  • Sparks
  • Global Medical Brigade
  • World percussion ensemble

A homeless day center in  Greensboro, NC
Interested in an internship that connects your passion for service, entrepreneurship, and art, then apply to work at the Interactive Resource Center (IRC), a day center for the homeless, for this summer, fall or spring. In this internship you would be a facilitator and supporter of the Artifacts Cooperative, a premier program at the IRC that works with artists facing homelessness to sell art, learn entrepreneurial skills and gain professional development. Artifacts is a cooperative-model business that enables artists to have ownership and leadership. Your role in the internship is to work with the artists in aims of building relationships, fostering confidence and personal development, and overall helping to promote the continual development of Artifacts.

The internship is flexible in hours and time commitment. We are looking for an individual who has strong leadership skills, community experience, and most importantly someone who is open to learning.

February’s Leadership for Lunch topic is entitled “Boosting creativity in your organization.” This session is aimed to help students understand the power of creativity, its potential for creating change in an organization, and provide ideas on how to encourage creativity in organizations. Creativity has the capacity to energize organizations and help spark new ideas. The discussion is facilitated by Michelle Kusel, Assistant Director for the Center for Leadership. Saturday, Feb. 26 is the Leadership Development Institute (LDI), which is a yearly event for on-campus leaders to grow and learn new skills. The institute includes a keynote speaker, followed by three break-out sessions where students can customize between four different presenters.

  • To Do As We Say: The Rhetoric of Awareness in the Age of Facebook
  • Diversity Intelligence (DiQ): Bold Vision for Organizational Leadership
