The GSI service-immersion trip offers members a seven-day experience to Jamaica and Washington, D.C. with brothers from across the country. Brothers will be engaged in direct, hands-on service, while engaging in reflection that will increase self-awareness and have an impact on future experiences with the fraternity and beyond.   

The foundation’s website notes, “GSI is unique and Delta Upsilon is proud to have developed this initiative. It serves a dual role in that it is not only the international philanthropy, but also the international service of the Fraternity.”

McElroy joined Delta Upsilon’s chapter at Elon in Spring 2013. Organization leaders said they are proud of his accomplishments and look forward to hearing about his contributions to communities abroad.

The award is given to a college brother who has excelled in a variety of ways: grade point average, involvement within the chapter, application of national programs (“Go to High School, Go to College”, “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People”, Project Alpha and Brother’s Keeper), as well as service initiatives.

Jiles met all of the requirements and received a scholarship in addition to the named recognition. He now has the opportunity to compete for the regional award against district winners from South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Florida.

Jiles competes at the Southern Region Convention in Orlando, Fla., from March 19-22, 2015.
