See the paper abstract below:

“The expansion of undergraduate entrepreneurship programs and centers has been fast and furious over the past couple of decades. A common structure has emerged that — not surprisingly — mirrors the undergraduate business curriculum in its general form. The perspective of the program frequently places heavy emphasis on the development of large scalable businesses suitable for major funding through venture or angel capital. In large universities this may be an appropriate perspective to take given that those schools often have large science, engineering, and medical programs that provide fertile ground for substantial commercializable ideas. But what about students not connected with these programs or smaller, liberal-arts-centric schools without built-in opportunity generators? Is this model appropriate for them? This paper proposes the Teaching Enterprise Network (TEN), an alternative entrepreneurship program structure that takes into account the weaknesses in entrepreneurial education today and the situation of modestly-sized teaching oriented schools.”

Barth Strempek publishes article in Educational Leadership Journal /u/news/2010/12/06/barth-strempek-publishes-article-in-educational-leadership-journal/ Mon, 06 Dec 2010 15:38:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/12/06/barth-strempek-publishes-article-in-educational-leadership-journal/ This is the final article in a series of pieces derived from Strempek’s work developing integrated business/entrepreneurship curricula. It critically examines sixteen integrated business core curricula at the undergraduate level and analyzes their differences, similarities, and assessment results. While six of these programs have been abandoned or are no longer operational as designed, the composite successes and failures offer several important lessons on how to design, implement, and sustain such innovations. Analysis of the collective assessment results suggests generally positive achievement of learning goals (core and higher-level objectives) and job placement outcomes. However, significant challenges concerning implementation and sustainability have been experienced by most schools.

Gary Bailey and Barth Strempek release recording for Haitian earthquake relief /u/news/2010/08/26/gary-bailey-and-barth-strempek-release-recording-for-haitian-earthquake-relief/ Thu, 26 Aug 2010 15:34:00 +0000 /u/news/2010/08/26/gary-bailey-and-barth-strempek-release-recording-for-haitian-earthquake-relief/ Brief Encounter – The Group

The group was started by brothers Tony, Montie, Velmar, and Gary Bailey, and included friends Maurice Whittington and Rufus Wilborn along with a few others who joined the group occasionally. They released two albums and eight singles including a couple on Capitol Records. A couple of those singles even made an appearance on the Billboard chart. Brief Encounter was the opening act for some well-known performers such as James Brown, KC and the Sunshine Band and Tavares. Tired of being on the cusp of success but not quite getting there, the group disbanded in 1983 and went their separate ways. Gary went into social work and education. Currently he has a private practice as a clinical social worker and psychotherapist along with providing counseling at 51爆料网. He is also working on a PhD in Psychology. Montie has been with United Parcel Service for his entire career and continues to produce spiritual music through Stand Ministries in Wilkesboro. Tony is retired from the banking industry and Velmar passed away from complications of diabetes about four years ago.

Brief Encounter has been the subject of magazine articles (Wax Poetics) and collectors’ interest from Italy, Spain, France, Sweden, as well as the US. Their music has been sampled, downloaded, and pirated, but they have been on the outside looking in – until now. Recently, Montie and Gary, along with Barth Strempek (Elon business professor and keyboardist), decided to embark on a program to regain control of some of the group’s music and perhaps relive some of the excitement they used to get from performing. Gary and Montie hatched an idea to release some previously-unreleased material and record some new tunes in the “Southern Soul” genre, that space between R&B, soul, and disco. Where the Spinners were a slick and polished, and the Ohio Players were groove and dance oriented, Brief Encounter adds earthiness and dense arrangements to the mix.

New Recording – A Unique Marketing Approach

This is the first new recording of Brief Encounter since the early 1980s. Proceeds will go toward Haitian Earthquake Relief, a cause that has receded from view the past few months but still requires major resources. This unique effort targeted toward the collectors’ market will be released as a 45rpm vinyl record. Copies will be numbered and signed, like print art. The #1 copy will be put up for auction on eBay beginning Friday, September 3, 2010. Following this auction the remainder of the limited edition run of 500 copies will be for sale through various outlets. SonicRecords (www.sonicrecords.com) of Winston-Salem has agreed to host their renewed commercial efforts.

The A-side is a tune (Shake and Move) that was recorded nearly 30 years ago but was never released. The B-side is a new studio recording of an original older tune (I Want You So Much) with Elon business professor Barth Strempek adding a little jazz flavor on the organ. Barth also assisted with business and marketing issues.

Gary encourages the Alamance and Burlington Community and friends to participate in the Brief Encounter auction on eBay beginning Sept. 3 and keep the Haitian Earthquake Relief effort in the hearts and minds of our citizens.

Strempek, O’Mara, Springer journal article published /u/news/2007/11/16/strempek-omara-springer-journal-article-published/ Fri, 16 Nov 2007 18:03:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/11/16/strempek-omara-springer-journal-article-published/ An article by Barth Strempek, Kevin O’Mara , and Rob Springer has been published in the Fall 2007 edition of the Journal of the Academy of Business Education (JABE). The article entitled “Purifying a Murky Mission: Responsible Business Leadership” details a process and results of an empirical study that identifies six primary factors related to the construct of responsible business leadership, the primary construct in the LSB mission statement. The study uses exploratory factor analysis on data collected from a cross-section of LSB constituents. See abstract below.

Abstract
When attempting to operationalize a worthy, yet ill-defined, mission statement, business schools may consider adopting the framework presented in this paper. The process of clarifying the nebulous concept of “Responsible Business Leadership,” which is central to one business school’s mission, is outlined in detail. The framework incorporates active participation by four major stakeholder groups to develop a common understanding of this key construct. Exploratory factor analysis identified six clear factors to guide future curriculum and program initiatives thus demonstrating the applicability of this framework for developing meaningful stakeholder engagement and discussion.
