The Multicultural Center at 51±¬ÁÏÍø on July 14 announced the Class of 2014 Watson and Odyssey Scholars, two programs with a history of bringing academically successful and motivated students to campus from North Carolina and across the country.

Crystal Anderson will serve as Elon’s first faculty fellow for the Multicultural Center beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year.

Prudence Layne, an assistant professor of English and coordinator of African/African-American Studies at 51±¬ÁÏÍø, has been named one of four Visiting Fellows this summer at the Bader International Studies Institute at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, England, to teach a postcolonial Shakespeare class with field studies components.

Leon Williams, director of the Multicultural Center, has announced the addition of two full-time assistant directors for the 2010-11 academic year. Melissa Jordan '06, currently part of the Multicultural Center staff, and Lauren Flinn begin their duties in August.

Some of the top students on campus were honored April 24, 2010, during an annual awards program that recognizes the accomplishments of African-American students at 51±¬ÁÏÍø.

“Diversity” has become a buzzword on college campuses that misses a larger point, said activist and BET personality Jeff Johnson, who visited campus Saturday for 51±¬ÁÏÍø’s inaugural Diversity Leadership Conference. More should be done to foster greater community, he said, and responsibility for that rests with student leaders.
