Elon alumni employees give back and reflect on Move-In Day 2024 /u/news/2024/08/28/elon-alumni-employees-give-back-and-reflect-on-move-in-day-2024/ Wed, 28 Aug 2024 13:21:34 +0000 /u/news/?p=993010 A recent graduate with a degree in聽international business and marketing at Elon, Hannah Southern ’22 was eager to see what she called the 鈥渇lip side鈥 of Move-In Day. Southern and her mother, Mary Southern, both work at Elon and jumped at the chance to lend a hand to help new students get settled.

鈥淚 remember when the sign-up sheet came out to volunteer for move-in, I called my mom and told her we need to sign up right now,鈥 shared Southern, who is an assistant registrar at Elon.

It was a good thing that they moved quickly because the sign-up sheets fill up quickly each year. So many faculty and staff members at Elon share their enthusiasm for this annual tradition, with many Elon alumni who now work at the university participating as a way to share their knowledge as former students with a new class of students who are just beginning their time at Elon. Those with their own Move-In Day stories are among the 170 Elon employees who help out on Move-In Day.

Kenneth Brown, Jr. 鈥19, assistant director for First Generation Student Support Services, distinctly remembers his first Move-In Day. He shared that being an Odyssey Program scholar helped orient him to campus and familiarize him with parts of Elon.

鈥淚’m an oldest child and I’m one of eight siblings and the excitement was like ‘this is something I’ve been building up to and working towards and now it’s finally happening,’鈥 shared Brown.

The聽Odyssey Program, which is part of the聽Center for Access and Success, is a highly selective, merit-based聽program consisting of talented individuals who are academically strong, civically engaged, action-oriented leaders in their communities, who will benefit from an Elon education and demonstrate high financial need.

As a student, Brown took full advantage of his time at Elon. He worked for Center for Race, Ethnicity and Diversity Education (CREDE) for two years as a student coordinator, lived in a Living-Learning Community, was part of the where he focused on athletics, and perhaps most notably, served as the class president for the university for three of his four years and as student body president his senior year through the Student Government Association.

Southern smiles in her dorm room.

Southern was a first-year student when Brown served as SGA president and she remembers his energy and enthusiasm, especially at football games. She served as an orientation leader on campus. She remembers the joy she felt on her own Move-In Day and having someone else help carry her belongings up to her new dorm.

鈥淭he energy of it all was a lot of fun,鈥 said Southern. 鈥淢y dad was living it up because he’s very handy and he was going around building everyone’s furniture and having the time of his life being a dad.鈥

Royal smiles as she holds up her diploma.

Simone Royal 鈥17, interim associate director for CREDE, lived on campus for all four years and felt fortunate to live in the new facilities of the Global Neighborhood and Park Place. CREDE supports Move-In Day by providing SMART (Student Mentors Advising Rising Talent) mentors who assist with new student move-in across the different campus neighborhoods.

鈥淓lon cares from the very beginning how they welcome students to campus,” said Royal. 鈥淓lon prioritizes the student experience, and it is very evident every year during orientation weekend with the ease and simplicity of Move-In Day for all the new students and their families.鈥

Brown said that Move-In Day is a great reminder of why he is working at a university, noting that the day is about more than moving boxes.

鈥淚 want to show students that those at Elon care about them,” said Brown. “Move-In is not just 鈥榟ere, take my boxes up to my dorm and say okay good luck.鈥 It鈥檚 also about the effort to have a conversation 鈥 and that matters.鈥欌

Brown returned to his first dorm room, Smith 310, and introduced himself to the new residents. He said the place meant a lot to him and he hopes that showing up will show the new residents this place can mean a lot to them.

Jackie Gardner Allred 鈥94 also visits her former room, West 216, to greet the newest residents and said it is her favorite thing about Move-In Day. She said much has changed since she first moved in and there was far less fanfare than there is now.

Allred and Southern both worked at Schar Center to check in people in their cars. Brown helped move people into the Colonnades Neighborhood.

鈥淭here is something special about everyone from all areas of campus working together for the same goal,” said Allred. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a great opportunity to meet and spend time with many people across various areas of campus that you may not interact with on a regular basis.鈥

Brown reflected on growing up in a small community in Greensboro. 鈥淕oing to Elon was like going to the Ritz-Carlton for me 鈥 how can I not give back or find ways to get involved?鈥 he said.

Elon shaped the person Brown is today, and he feels a sense of responsibility to figure out how he can best support efforts like Move-In.

Southern described herself as Elon鈥檚 biggest fan. “I just had such a phenomenal experience because of the people who poured time and effort into me,” she said. “And I felt like everything that I did here, even just working in the office, set me up for some level of future success. And so, for me, it felt really impactful and exciting to be on the other side of Move-In and to provide students that same experience.鈥

Elon dedicates space in Alamance Building in honor of retired University Registrar Mark Albertson /u/news/2024/03/08/elon-dedicates-space-in-alamance-building-in-honor-of-retired-university-registrar-mark-albertson/ Fri, 08 Mar 2024 21:58:48 +0000 /u/news/?p=974403 51爆料网 on Thursday dedicated a main conference room on the first floor of Alamance Building in honor of Mark Albertson, a recipient of the Elon Medallion who served the university for more than 30 years as university registrar.

Albertson personally certified about 26,300 students for graduation during his tenure with the institution while shepherding Elon’s academic record-keeping into the digital age during decades of sustained and impressive growth. He took a personal interest in the success of students, meeting with each to discuss their path to graduation while working with faculty to introduce new and innovative courses into the curriculum.

President Connie Ledoux Book with retired University Registrar Mark Albertson at a ceremony dedicating the Albertson Conference Room in his honor on March 7, 2024.

“Alamance is the historic heart of campus so it’s appropriate that the first floor includes the Mark Albertson Conference Room named for a person with a big heart who played a key role in Elon’s history,” President Connie Ledoux Book told those gathered in the room on Thursday to celebrate the dedication. “There has never been a person at Elon with more energy, enthusiasm, ideas and a passion for the work we are doing.”

In his remarks, Albertson was quick to recognize and celebrate the contributions of his staff through the years, many of whom had gathered to mark the occasion, noting that the recognition wouldn’t have been possible without their contributions. “Thank you for this day and this recognition 鈥 it truly means a lot to me,” Albertson said. “We were a family and we are proud of our accomplishments. … We all have done our best to advance Elon and it shows.”

Provost Emeritus Gerry Francis offering remarks at a ceremony dedicating the Albertson Conference Room in his honor on March 7, 2024.

Albertson joined Elon in 1978 as assistant registrar and was named registrar the following year. Gerry Francis, provost emeritus and professor emeritus, explained the Albertson developed and sustained a team during his tenure at Elon that prioritized maintaining accurate records and working closely with students and faculty to ensure enrollment ran smoothly and students stayed on track.

“He was organized, he was detailed and he cared,” Francis said. “Mark developed an in-person audit for every one of his graduating seniors in the fall and he brought them in and sat them down and talked with them individually to let them know whether they were on target to graduate in the spring. Nobody slipped behind.”

Book noted that when Albertson was registrar, Elon like other institutions would withhold a graduate’s diploma if they had an outstanding balance on their account. Many times, Albertson would secretly pay the balances of students who were struggling financially to ensure they received their diplomas, she said. “I’ve also heard the quiet stories of Mark praying for students, trying to pull them aside and talk to them, she said. “Those are the things we’re celebrating today. Those are the values that you carried into Elon and those values became Elon.”

Albertson oversaw the transition from handwritten academic records into digital systems as well as the evolution of the institution from a college to a university that now boasts more than 7,000 students. He was responsible for placing student transcripts online, streamlining one of the most important functions of the university. The first Commencement Albertson oversaw had about 300 students (307 to be exact, Albertson noted during the ceremony) and now Elon graduates about 1,500 students each spring.

In his efforts to promote Elon, Albertson brought prominent people to campus, including Philip L. Carret, a New York investor whose connection to Albertson led to the establishment of the Philip L. Carret Thomas Jefferson Essay Competition, which Carret endowed with a generous gift to Elon. Albertson also helped develop Elon鈥檚 distinctive Winter Term program and courses such as The Business of NASCAR and World War II 鈥 A Closer Look. Albertson helped lead the World War II Winter Term program and included his father, a veteran of the war and the Normandy invasion, in the program in Europe.

For his dedication to students and the university community and in recognition of his service to Elon, Albertson was awarded the Elon Medallion, the university’s highest honor for service, in 2014.

The newly named Albertson Conference Room will continue to be a central meeting place for many Elon leaders for generations to come, with the room’s name now bearing the name of a person who has contributed so much to what Elon is today, said Jim Piatt, senior vice president for university advancement and external affairs.

“We come together as a community to honor, to lift up and to acknowledge one of the true architects of the modern Elon,” Piatt said. “What better place to bestow the name of Mark Albertson? A featured space in a signature building where the Elon community comes together 鈥 faculty, staff, students 鈥 we come together to learn, to plan, to strategize, to discuss, and occasionally to debate. We come together, and day by day we make Elon a better place.”

Along with numerous former colleagues and friends, Albertson was joined at the dedication by his wife, Andrea, who received her degree from Elon in 1997, his daughter, Shannon Albertson ’93 G’96, and his son, Macon Albertson ’95, and his wife, Debbie.
