Carolina Biological Supply, a Burlington, N.C., company that provides materials to the Elon Academy, has produced a video highlighting the science work of faculty member Mat Gendle, assistant professor of psychology.

In one room on Tuesday, first and second graders place animals on a magnetic storyboard. Down the hall, older students listen to a tale of wombats. Children enrolled in a School of Education program are attending classes on campus this month for an enrichment academy that serves as an internship setting for current and future special needs teachers in Elon’s graduate education program.

From poster presentations to a photo slideshow, Elon Academy scholars reflected on their recent work Friday during the closing ceremony for an enrichment program that brings some of Alamance County’s brightest high school minds to the university each summer for a college immersion experience.

Glenda Crawford, professor of education, and April Post, lecturer in foreign languages, co-presented their research at the Second International Conference on Service-Learning in Teacher Education, June 25-27, 2009 in Galway, Ireland.

Directors of Curriculum Materials Centers from 15 public and private colleges and universities met June 19 for their biannual meeting at the School of Education. Laura Williams, director of Elon’s Curriculum Resource Center, hosted the meeting of the North Carolina CMC Association.

When it comes to science, Terry Tomasek, assistant professor of education, believes students need to go beyond the classroom walls to truly experience and understand the subject.

Some want to encourage more recycling. Others hope to start after-school clubs. Better cafeteria food. Fundraising for school supplies. Perhaps “Friday relaxation.” Local seventh graders shared ideas Wednesday to strengthen their school communities as part of an annual youth leadership program at 51±¬ÁÏÍø.

Three 51±¬ÁÏÍø faculty members and two recent graduates presented research papers June 11 to the 5th Annual Symposium on Service Learning and Civic Engagement at Western Carolina University. Their focus was the use of academic service-learning to challenge the stereotypical views often held by teacher candidates about students and families living in poverty.
