Ceremony marks School of Communications move to HD /u/news/2011/12/08/ceremony-marks-school-of-communications-move-to-hd/ Thu, 08 Dec 2011 19:41:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/12/08/ceremony-marks-school-of-communications-move-to-hd/

The School of Communications hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony Friday morning to thank an alumnus and business executives who made possible the school’s transition to high-definition, tapeless video recording and editing.

School of Communications Dean Paul Parsons and Christopher Waters ‘94, 51±¬ÁÏÍø’s assistant chief information officer, led the ceremony in Studio A of the McEwen building, which featured alumnus Troy Senkiewicz ’98, owner of the California-based DigiMax Consulting and the person who worked closest with vendors to secure donated material.

The rewired building brings state-of-the-art broadcasting technology to 51±¬ÁÏÍø students and to Elon Student Television. Students can now record in high-definition without using tapes, which streamlines a production process that results in superior television images.

The many yards of cable, installed late this past summer in both studios A and B in McEwen, was provided by GEPCO International, a division of General Cable Technologies Corporation. GEPCO supplies cable for a significant portion of the world’s broadcasting and entertainment industry. The donation of the cable, plus Senkiewicz’s services, which also were provided for free, bringing Elon’s total savings to more than $20,000.

In addition, the university saved tens of thousands of dollars by purchasing high-definition Sony cameras through an agreement Senkiewicz brokered with ClarkPowell, a national audiovisual company with offices in Winston-Salem, N.C.

“It was the access to equipment and the latest technology that gave me the education for starting my own business,” Senkiewicz said of the resources and labor he donated and secured from others for the project. “This project has given me the opportunity to give back to Elon and allows others to do the same.”

Senkiewicz’s television career began nearly two decades ago as a production assistant for Elon Student Television. In fact, he was one of the first students Waters hired upon joining the university staff.

Associate Professor Vic Costello, chair of the Faculty Technology Committee in the School of Communications, said the resources and time Senkiewicz and corporate partners gave to the university will be invaluable to students.

“Cable is one of those non-glamorous components to television production, hidden in the walls and running along the floor, but it’s quite essential for an HD facility,” he said. “It’s great that we have alumni like Troy who can partner with us on projects like this.”

At a luncheon immediately following the ribbon cutting, Waters thanked influential corporate partners and individuals that made the conversion a success:

Marty Meredith, Sony Corporation
Gary Bennett, ClarkPowell
Steve Harris, ClarkPowell
Joe Zajac, General Cable/GEPCO
Brian Lamar, General Cable/GEPCO
Brad Pope, General Cable/GEPCO

Looking for students interested in revamped news show /u/news/2009/02/15/looking-for-students-interested-in-revamped-news-show/ Sun, 15 Feb 2009 14:13:00 +0000 /u/news/2009/02/15/looking-for-students-interested-in-revamped-news-show/ My name is Justin Berger, and for the past two semesters I have co-hosted a talk radio show on WSOE called the J&B Biased News Show. The format is not set in stone for the televised version, but so far we have used the first half of the show to share the news, then a short “Day Time Directive,” which discusses the kind of silly current events that you may hear about on day time court television and such. The last half of the show is spent discussing a single issue that is often controversial.

This semester we are looking to get it aired on ETV, so right now we’re looking to see if we can get some interest and a potential crew to help shoot a pilot episode. So if you’re interested at all, just shoot me an email!

Video by Aitcheson selected for Charlotte Film Festival /u/news/2007/08/14/video-by-aitcheson-selected-for-charlotte-film-festival/ Tue, 14 Aug 2007 20:56:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/08/14/video-by-aitcheson-selected-for-charlotte-film-festival/ A video produced by television services staff member Marion Aitcheson during a Project Pericles service sabbatical has been selected for the 2007 Charlotte Film Festival.

Aitcheson was born and raised in the city of Eisenach during the
height of Soviet controlled East Germany. Her early years were spent
with loving grandparents until a series of fateful events and family
indifference forced her into the care of the East German social system.
The experiences she gained from her years in the Children’s
Home significantly shaped her life, giving her a unique perspective on
the world along with skills and confidence to succeed. After a decade away, Aitcheson returned to the children’s home in
Eisenach, Germany where she spent her adolescent years.  This
documentary explores her bittersweet homecoming, reunites her with old
friends and teachers, and brings her face to face with memories of the
disintegration of her own family.

The Annual Charlotte Film Festival is committed to bringing to the community the best of independent cinema. This
year, the festival gets underway on Thursday, Sept. 6 with an
Opening Night Gala and Awards Ceremony, which it will host on the
rooftop of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, in the heart of Uptown
Charlotte. Following that, and
before concluding on the evening of Sunday, Sept. 9, the festival
will screen more than 30 narrative, documentary and international
features and short films from all around the globe; many of them world
premieres. Attendees will also have access to film-related panel
discussions as well as electrifying after parties.
